The Certificate in Sport Management is aimed at enhancing and formalising the practical knowledge already acquired by current administrative staff working within sport organisations. The programme of study comprises of seven mandatory study-units covering the more pertinent areas of management within a sport organisation including: (i) stakeholder involvement; (ii) strategic and financial management; (iii) sport marketing and sponsorship; (iv) communication, the media and public relations and (v) event and facility management; (vi) Human Resources & Volunteer management and (vii) legal considerations (e.g. disciplinary hearings, rules and regulations, match-fixing and doping issues).

The Certificate is aimed at developing the theoretical and practical knowledge of sport administrators, thus contributing to the diffusion of up-to-date management techniques and best practices among sport associations and their stakeholders (e.g. clubs) and enabling participants to master the knowledge and skills expected of future senior administrators.

With the increasing professionalisation of sport organisations, graduates of this Certificate should be able to secure meaningful work experience in this sector. This would put them in good stead as in 2017, sport-related employment represented 2.12 per cent of total employment in the EU. Sport represents a labour-intensive growth industry which means that growth in the sports industry is likely to lead to additional employment (EU Sport Forum, 2017). This trend is also manifest in Malta.
